Louis-François Cartier

Louis-François Cartier was a French jeweller and the founder of Cartier. In 1847 he took over the Paris workshop of his master Adolphe Picard, establishing the enterprise that later generations of the family developed into an international jewellery and watch maison. His son Alfred joined the business and his grandsons Louis, Pierre and Jacques expanded in Paris, New York and London, creating many of the geographic and creative foundations associated with Cartier today. Louis-François is recorded as the original founder, while the designs, locations and commercial expansion attributable to later family members remain individually scoped.
