Karin Gustafsson
Karin Gustafsson is a Swedish fashion designer and the design director of COS, the H&M Group label. She joined the project in 2006 as an assistant designer while COS was still being developed, before its first stores opened in 2007. Gustafsson progressed through design roles as the brand grew, and reporting identifies her as design director by 2020; COS’s restrained wardrobe, attention to construction and recurring reinterpretation of classics have been central to her public work. She studied tailoring and dressmaking before completing fashion study at the Royal College of Art, combining technical garment-making with design research. Gustafsson’s title is kept as design director: Vogue’s 2025 report explicitly corrected an earlier use of “creative director,” while coverage through 2026 continues to identify her in the design leadership role. That distinction matters because the brand does not publish an individual credit for each piece in its large in-house design organization.
