Fashion career profile
John Ray
John Ray is a Scottish menswear designer whose career spans British fashion and two major luxury houses. He studied menswear at Central Saint Martins and completed postgraduate study at the Royal College of Art. After working with Katharine Hamnett, he joined Gucci during Tom Ford’s era and became creative director of menswear in 2004, when the house used separate category leads rather than a single successor. Ray later took a long break from the industry before returning as creative director of dunhill in 2012. There he brought a restrained, craft-led approach to the British menswear house, drawing on its tailoring and sporting heritage; his final collection was for Spring/Summer 2016. His Dunhill role is recorded once, with the menswear remit and 2012 start date, correcting duplicate overlapping career rows in the source data.
