Fashion career profile

Franco Moschino

Franco Moschino (1950–1994) was an Italian designer whose work used humor and visual irony to challenge fashion conventions. He studied painting at Milan’s Accademia di Belle Arti and supported his studies with freelance fashion illustration. In 1971 he began working with Gianni Versace, then designed for the Italian label Cadette. In 1983 he founded Moschino and presented the house’s first women’s collection in Milan. His designs repurposed familiar symbols and garments with witty, sometimes confrontational details, drawing on Pop Art and Surrealism rather than treating luxury as solemn. The label expanded during the 1980s into menswear, Moschino Jeans, fragrance and Cheap and Chic. Moschino also used advertising for social commentary: a 1992 campaign is documented by Istituto Marangoni. He stopped staging fashion shows in 1991 but continued public-facing creative work before his death in 1994. His collaborator Rossella Jardini succeeded him as the house’s designer, a later role that should not be merged with his founder tenure.
