Fashion career profile

Dawn Mello

Dawn Mello (1931–2020) was an American fashion merchant and executive whose work at Bergdorf Goodman and Gucci influenced both luxury retail and fashion-house strategy. She studied at Boston’s Modern School of Fashion Design, worked in fashion merchandising and joined Bergdorf Goodman in 1975 as Vice President and Fashion Director. She became the retailer’s president in 1984 and helped reposition it through selective buying and the promotion of designers including Donna Karan and Michael Kors. In 1989 she moved to Gucci as Executive Vice President and Creative Director Worldwide, where she helped narrow the product range and restore focus to the house’s leather goods and ready-to-wear. She returned to Bergdorf Goodman in 1994 and later founded a luxury-market consulting firm. Mello was a merchant and organizational leader rather than a garment designer; her Gucci record should not be confused with Tom Ford’s subsequent creative-director appointment.
