Fashion career profile
Achille Maramotti
Achille Maramotti (1927–2005) was an Italian fashion entrepreneur who founded Max Mara in Reggio Emilia in 1951. After earning a law degree at the University of Parma, he chose the clothing business over legal practice. His central idea was to bring the quality and design discipline associated with high-end tailoring into industrially produced, ready-to-wear womenswear. That model helped Max Mara become an early and influential Italian ready-to-wear house. Maramotti remained closely identified with the company but withdrew from direct command in 1989, leaving design leadership and day-to-day management to a broader organization rather than serving as a named creative director. His approach emphasized product quality, durable outerwear and a stable design organization; the house’s later collaborations with external designers were generally developed in partnership with its internal team. The profile distinguishes his founding and business leadership from the public-facing creative appointments of designers who worked with Max Mara.
