At a glance
Smith believed she had experienced other lives: in a French royal court, as an Indian princess and as a visitor to Mars. Erdem takes those claims as imaginative starting points rather than a single historical costume. The collection approaches identity as something assembled and revised. Its source is a woman whose art and visions allowed her to keep inventing different selves.
Several selves
Smith’s three imagined incarnations provide different directions within one collection.
History and imagination
Courtly references coexist with a story that reaches beyond the earthly world.
Dress as reinvention
The collection frames femininity as expressive and changeable rather than fixed.
The setting
Presented at the British Museum on 21 September 2025. ERDEM’s official invitation confirms the venue and show date.
