Fashion career profile

Tadashi Yanai

Tadashi Yanai is a Japanese retail entrepreneur who transformed his family’s regional menswear business into Fast Retailing, the group behind UNIQLO and other apparel brands. He joined the family company in 1972, became its president and CEO in 1984, and opened the first UNIQLO store in Hiroshima that year. He took the Fast Retailing chairman role in 2002 and has served as Chairman, President and CEO since 2005. Fast Retailing’s current director profile also lists him as Chairman of UNIQLO Co., a subsidiary-level role that is distinct from his group-wide leadership. In September 2023 he became Chairman of UNIQLO Co. The profile deliberately separates Fast Retailing group responsibilities from UNIQLO-specific positions so that parent-company activity and financial results are not misattributed to the UNIQLO brand. The company describes the business as a global apparel group built around its LifeWear proposition.
