Pierre Cardin
Pierre Cardin was an Italian-born French couturier and entrepreneur who arrived in Paris in 1945. After working with Christian Dior and Elsa Schiaparelli, he founded his own fashion house in 1950 and presented his first women’s haute couture collection in 1953. The 1954 bubble dress and his first couture boutique marked an early period of a practice that moved between couture, ready-to-wear and industrial design. Cardin became associated with geometric, space-age silhouettes, unisex ideas and an unusually broad licensing business. Furniture, objects, graphic design and theatrical production were also part of his creative work. He remained the founder and creative director of his namesake house until his death in 2020; the current maison’s leadership belongs to a later chapter.
