Pierre Balmain
Pierre Balmain (1914–1982) was a French couturier who founded the Paris house that bears his name. He moved to Paris in 1933 to study architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts, then redirected his career toward fashion. He worked in Edward Molyneux’s couture house from 1934 to 1939 and joined Lucien Lelong’s house in 1939, where he worked alongside Christian Dior. In 1945 Balmain opened his own couture house at 44 rue François-Ier. His first collections helped restore the standing of Paris couture after the Second World War; the sculpted waists and full skirts of his early work became associated with the “New French Style.” Balmain’s architectural training informed a controlled approach to silhouette and construction, while the house’s polished eveningwear became linked to the “Jolie Madame” image. He led the maison until his death in 1982. His founder tenure is distinct from the successive creative directors who shaped the brand after him.
