Oscar de la Renta
Oscar de la Renta (1932–2014) was a Dominican-American designer whose career linked European couture training with American fashion. He left the Dominican Republic at eighteen to study painting at Madrid’s Academy of San Fernando, where he began sketching for Spanish fashion houses and apprenticed with Cristóbal Balenciaga. He later moved to Paris as a couture assistant at Lanvin under Antonio Castillo. In 1963 he came to New York to design Elizabeth Arden’s couture collection, and in 1965 launched his own ready-to-wear label. The company later expanded into bridal, fragrance, home and accessories. De la Renta also played a significant institutional role in American fashion, serving two terms as president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, from 1973 to 1976 and 1987 to 1989. His Balmain creative-director tenure from 1993 to 2002 was a separate appointment from his own house. His work combined polished eveningwear with sustained business and civic leadership.
