Fashion career profile

Martin Margiela

Martin Margiela is a Belgian designer known for making construction, reuse and the passage of time visible in fashion. He graduated from the fashion department of Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1980 and worked as Jean Paul Gaultier’s assistant from 1984 to 1987. In 1988 he founded Maison Martin Margiela in Paris with Jenny Meirens. The house’s early work challenged conventional ideas of finish and authorship through exposed seams, recycled garments and materials, altered proportions and collective presentation. From 1997 to 2003 Margiela designed Hermès womenswear, creating a quieter wardrobe grounded in comfort, quality and craftsmanship—a separate role from his own experimental label. He left Maison Martin Margiela in 2009; the creative team continued the house before later successors took over. Margiela’s profile records both the studio apprenticeship and his Hermès tenure as structured career history, while distinguishing his departure from the continued life of the brand.
