Fashion career profile
Kenzo Takada
Kenzo Takada (1939–2020) was a Japanese designer who established a Paris fashion house known for its mix of prints, color and cultural references. He enrolled at Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo in 1958 and received the school’s So-En award in 1960. After leaving Japan in 1964, he arrived in Paris on 1 January 1965 and began selling designs to French fashion and retail contacts. In 1970 he presented a first collection and opened a boutique in Galerie Vivienne, founding the house that became KENZO. The label’s early Paris success helped make Takada one of the first Japanese designers to gain broad recognition in the French fashion system. LVMH acquired the brand in 1993; Takada left the house in 1999 and continued creative projects across fashion, costume and interiors. He designed uniforms for Japan’s team at the 2004 Athens Olympics and costumes for a 2019 production of Madama Butterfly. His later work remained distinct from the house’s subsequent design leadership.
