Karl Lagerfeld
Karl Lagerfeld (1933–2019) was a German-born designer whose career spanned more than six decades and several major fashion houses. After moving to Paris as a teenager, he entered the fashion industry through illustration and won the International Wool Secretariat design competition in 1954; the award led to work as an assistant to Pierre Balmain. He later designed for Jean Patou and worked with Chloé, Fendi and his own label. At Chloé, he moved from a collaborative design role to sole designer in the 1970s, then returned for a second tenure in the 1990s. His Fendi work began in 1965 and included fur and women’s ready-to-wear, while Chanel appointed him artistic director of fashion in 1983. Across these houses, Lagerfeld adapted established codes through historical references, technical experimentation and theatrical presentation.
