Douglas Tompkins
Douglas Tompkins was an American outdoor entrepreneur, conservationist and a co-founder of The North Face. He and Susie Tompkins Buell opened a specialist outdoor retail store in San Francisco in 1966 and moved the company toward technical equipment and apparel before selling it in 1968. Tompkins later co-founded Esprit and ultimately directed much of his work toward land conservation in Chile and Argentina. His relationship to The North Face is therefore an early, two-person founding role—not continuing design leadership, ownership after 1968 or responsibility for the VF-owned global business that developed later.
