Cristóbal Balenciaga
Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895–1972) was a Spanish couturier born in Getaria, in the Basque Country. He learned dressmaking through practical work and opened his first fashion business in San Sebastián in 1917, later expanding to Madrid and Barcelona. In 1937 he established his Paris couture house at 10 Avenue George V. Balenciaga was respected by fellow couturiers for his command of pattern cutting, construction and the full process of making a garment. His work reshaped the relationship between fabric and body through forms including the tunic, sack and balloon silhouettes, while his approach to volume and line influenced generations of designers. His house presented its final couture collection in 1968, when he retired and closed its salons. The Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum in Getaria now preserves and researches the garments, documents and business history that illuminate both his craft and the growth of his international maison.
