Fashion career profile
Consuelo Castiglioni
Consuelo Castiglioni is a Swiss-born fashion designer who founded Marni in Milan in 1994 with her husband, Gianni Castiglioni, and his sister Marina. Without formal fashion-design training, she developed the label from the family’s fur business, treating fur as a material to be reworked, colored and combined rather than a symbol of conventional luxury. Her approach expanded into ready-to-wear, accessories and menswear, building Marni’s identity around unusual color, print, texture and artistic experimentation. Castiglioni remained the house’s founder and creative director for 22 years. In 2016 she stepped down and left the company, with Francesco Risso named as her successor. Her contribution is therefore best understood as the formation of a coherent house language and organization over two decades, not as a current design appointment. The profile records her founding partnership accurately rather than attributing Marni’s creation to her alone.
