Batsheva Hay

Batsheva Hay is an American fashion designer and founder of the New York label Batsheva, launched in 2016. She trained and worked as a lawyer before beginning to make dresses for herself and her daughter, an experiment that grew into a design practice. Hay has described her visual references through vintage clothing, flea-market finds and the antique calico dresses she wore while studying at Stanford and Georgetown Law. Her collections developed a distinctive vocabulary of high-necked shapes, ruffles, vintage-inspired prints and cotton quilting fabrics, alongside pieces in a broader range of materials. The work uses familiar ideas of modest dress and historical femininity as a contemporary personal-style language rather than a fixed uniform. Hay was named among the 2018 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists, and Vogue’s coverage of her Fall 2018 collection documents how the label’s recognizable silhouettes were being presented and adapted for customers. This profile does not infer a law degree institution or replace the education data already in the source record without stronger evidence.
