Fashion career profile
Antonio Marras
Antonio Marras is an Italian fashion designer and multidisciplinary artist from Alghero, Sardinia, where local history and material culture remain central to his work. He began developing fashion collections in the late 1980s and presented his first named couture runway in Rome in 1996, followed by prêt-à-porter in Milan in 1999. His practice combines clothing with painting, installation, photography, theatre and costume design. LVMH appointed him artistic director of KENZO in 2003; his first collection for the Paris house appeared in 2004, and he remained through 2011. Alongside that appointment he developed his own house and lines including I’M Isola Marras. Marras’s work is distinguished by layered references to Sardinian culture without reducing the island to folkloric motifs. His profile presents KENZO as a completed external appointment and his namesake practice as a separate body of work.
