BIRKENSTOCK is a German footwear company whose family shoemaking tradition can be traced to Johann Adam Birkenstock in 1774. Its modern product system emerged through later generations: Konrad Birkenstock developed an anatomically shaped last in 1897 and a flexible insole in 1902, while Karl Birkenstock developed the original footbed sandal for serial production in 1963.
